Hollie teaches at Putney High School and from her studio in Godalming, Surrey. Hollie has over 15 years teaching experience and is as deeply committed to her students as she is with her playing work.
I believe every student is different and my teaching reflects this. I naturally adapt my teaching to suit each individual. Learning an instrument develops confidence, teaches self discipline, and for many is a way of expression and communication. The most important thing for me is that my students enjoy music, have fun, grow in confidence and love playing the flute.
Everyone needs a goal to aim for and to feel inspired and motivated. Concerts are the best form of motivation and I encourage my students to take up all performance opportunities, especially from a young age. With the right preparation, time and guidance, exams provide an attainable goal to aim for and enable constructive criticism and praise from another perspective. That said, I do not push for my students to take exams if they do not want to take them. Enjoyment of music making should always come first and it helps when students see ABRSM or Trinity exams as a performance opportunity rather than an ‘exam’.
I cater for all ages and levels, from a 7 year old learning to play their first note, to an A Level student preparing for a Music College audition.
Hollie offers music theory lessons for all different instrumentalists and singers, as it is not always possible for teachers to have enough time to prepare their students for theory exams. Hollie is used to coaching students in order to prepare them for their Grade 5 ABRSM theory exam, so they can continue post grade 5 on the ABRSM syllabus.

“My 9 year old son has been taught by Hollie for the past 8 months and I am very impressed with the standard of teaching. I sometimes sit in on lessons and am amazed at how much enthusiasm and fun Hollie brings to the sessions and just how much she throws into each lesson. She not only covers the technical aspects but also musicianship, history, listening skills etc all of which are essential aspects to a musician but often forgotten about in routine lessons. She has even constructed a personal practice timetable and written a guide to successful practicing for my son (now it’s up to him to start using them !!).
I cannot recommend Hollie highly enough.””
““I had flute lessons as a child and twenty years on have picked it up again. I have had lessons with Hollie for 6 months and it’s an absolute joy. She has been wonderful at picking up on certain technique problems and focusing my attention to basic practice as well as encouraging me to tackle more complicated repertoire. Hollie’s undeniable passion for the flute is very clear through her teaching and she has certainly inspired me to work hard and, more importantly to enjoy playing the flute”.”
